Social Media, Ampro and Children in Detention

The amazing intersection of a website, Facebook, Google, and a gift for the children in detention happened in early December, 2009. I am now a believer in the power of social media.
Episcopal City Mission has a long tradition of giving gifts to the children who find themselves in detention on Christmas morning. We posted a list of the items that the chaplains believed would be the most appreciated to our website (ecitymission.org) and our Facebook page (Episcopal City Mission). This list included Ampro hair gel which is used by the children along with other African American body products.
On December 3, 2009, a sales representative from Ampro called ECM and said that she had a Google Alert which told her that we had mentioned her company by name on the web and on Facebook. She wanted to donate the Ampro hair gel to ECM to be used by the children in detention. Because of that donation, the centers now have enough Ampro gel for a year.
I was surprised that ECM’s need for something the children could use while in detention could be discovered this way. I am very thankful for the generosity of Ampro. And even though Google had the software that matched us together; we know God didn’t need a website to bring us all together.
